With profound sadness, we remember Dr. Jim Gimpel, the visionary founder of Gimpel Software and pioneer in the software tools industry. His passion, dedication, and innovative spirit laid the foundation for the success of PC-lint Plus today.
Jim’s journey began at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he worked on the IBM/370 mainframe and contributed to groundbreaking projects like Multics, PL/1, UNIX, and SNOBOL.
Jim’s passion for teaching and research led him to positions at Stevens Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, Temple University, and Lehigh University, where he developed various programming tools, including BASTOC, a Basic to C translator. However, his foresight during the rise of the IBM PC truly set the stage for his enduring legacy. Recognizing the complexities and risks of the C language, Jim developed C-terp, a C interpreter, and founded Gimpel Software in 1984. This work evolved into his most celebrated achievement: the creation of PC-lint.
PC-lint, released in 1985, was a pioneering static analyzer designed to catch bugs and improve the safety of C code—an essential tool for developers navigating the intricacies of C programming. This was followed by FlexeLint, the C Shroud, and C-Vision, further cementing Jim’s reputation as a leader in software quality tools. His contributions have become a cornerstone for C/C++ developers globally, as PC-lint lives on today as PC-lint Plus 2.0, continuing to be actively used, developed, and enhanced.
Jim retired in 2022 after selling Gimpel Software to Vector Informatik. However, his influence endures through the software that safeguards code quality and the countless developers who benefit from his work daily. We are deeply grateful for Jim’s vision and dedication, which have left an unforgettable mark on the programming world.
